Earthquake
The modified Mercalli intensity is VII-VIII ( Very strong-Severe ) on the western side of the island of Hawaii, and VI ( ) on the eastern side of Maui. The intensity V ( Medium ) trembles felt down to Oahu, where pieces of damage are being reported. Earthquakes cause property damage, injuries, landslides, power cuts, and airport delays and closures. Governor Linda Lingle issued a state-wide disaster declaration.
Damage
The most severe damage caused by the earthquake is focused on the north and western sides of the island of Hawaii. The damage was also quite severe on the eastern side of Maui, and minor damage spread to West Oahu, 170 miles (270 km) from the epicenter. On the Big Island, many houses have large cracks and broken windows, and at least 61 buildings were destroyed and red-marked by officials. Almost all homes in western Hawaii report extensive internal damage but most avoid significant structural damage, the reason being that most of the buildings around the epicenter of the earthquake have been built in recent decades and are well built. Even so, more than $ 200 million damage occurred.
The largest and most luxurious hotels on the island of Hawaii also occur clustered within ten miles (16 km) of the epicenter of the earthquake along the Kohala coast. The 1965 Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has the entire southern end of the collapse, and the hotel's upper floors are considered "destroyed." The hotel closed December 1 after a month-long check revealed that the building was unsafe and in danger of destruction. After a $ 150 million renovation, the hotel reopened in December 2008. The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel was temporarily evacuated after an earthquake due to structural damage, broken glass and floods caused by broken water pipes. The Surety Kohala Corporation assesses structural integrity to their Kohala Ditch, which serves as a tourist attraction for 10 years. The ditch is considered irreparable and insecure, ultimately shutting down this money maker.
Many roads and bridges collapsed or cracked inside, and the crew of cleanliness had to work for days to get rid of the debris from countless landslides. Many of the island's landmarks are severely affected. The Kalahikiola Congregational Church in Kohala was destroyed by the collapse of the stone walls of the church; Hawi's chimney, a legacy of the old sugarcane trade, really collapsed too. The Hulihee Palace in Kailua Kona suffered extensive structural damage. Another popular tourist area, Kealakekua Bay, the home of the white monument Captain James Cook, was swept away by a massive landslide that caused the entire bay and surrounding area to disappear briefly in thick clouds of brown dust.
Mauna Kea Observatory
During earthquakes and aftershocks, a number of telescopes at Mauna Kea Observatories suffered minor damage, especially Kecks 1 and 2 in the W. M. Keck Observatory, and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). CFHT operated and resumed online on October 19, but Kecks was not returned to full operation until February 28, 2007.

Power plants in Maui and Big Island automatically turn off power to prevent damage, and generators trip over Oahu, causing overload in the power grid. Oahu power outages lasted 14 hours in several locations; only half of Hawaii's Hahu (OEC) Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) customers recover before 9 pm, while power outages generally take place around 5 pm on Maui and Hawaii. Power is returned to all HECO circuits at 1:55 am; However, there is an isolated outage due to local problems, such as a broken fuse. Power at Laie and Kahuku is not restored until 3 am. In Honolulu and Kahe, the HECO generator is shut down, and other generators try to keep up with it, resulting in uneven loads in Oahu's power grid and causing the system to die to prevent damage.
