The 3rd Medical Command (MCDS) or " Desert Medics " is headquartered in Atlanta, GA and manages all of the Army Deployable field medical units east of Ohio. While 807 MCDS covers the MTOE medical unit to the west and ARMEDCOM provides command and control for all units of Table of Distribution and Allowance (TDA) in CONUS.

The 3rd MCD Unit provides general care, surgery, dental, ambulance, behavioral health, preventive maintenance, and veterinary support to Army units and civilians.

Lineage

3d Medical Command Headquarters and Company Headquarters was formed December 21, 1928, in the Regular Army as a 3d Surgery Group.

Enabled May 5, 1942, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Reorganized and redesigned August 1, 1945, as Medical Professional Services 896.

Inactivated October 6, 1945, in Germany.

Redesigned March 16, 1991, as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Medical Command.

Enabled in Saudi Arabia with personnel from Company Headquarters, 3d (Temporary Medical Command) held Sept. 16, 1990 in Saudi Arabia.

ARCENT Medical Group (Provisional) was established on December 6, 1990 by ARCENT Permanent Order 262-1.

On December 29, 1990 ARCENT Permanent Order 273-1 changed the order to create the United States Armed Forces (US) Army Central Command Force Command.

To provide the necessary staff to the Medical Command, the 202th Medical Group staff, an Army National Guard unit from Florida, combined with ARCENT Medical Team staff.

On March 5, 1991, the Command of the Permanent Order Command 31-1 activated the 3rd effective Medical Order of March 15, 1991.

This activation is carried out without alteration in the mission or staff of the ARCENT Medical Command.

Description

In the maroon triangle, one point down, with the yellow 1 / 8 inch (0.32Ã, cm ), 3 inches high (7.6 cm) and 2 3 / 4 inch (7.0 cm ) in overall width, two yellow snakes with maroon eyes tangled on a yellow staff with a white Maltese cross on top.

Symbolism

Maroon and white are colors traditionally associated with Medical Corps. The designation of Commando is represented by the shape of the symbol triangle. The staff and snakes refer to the medical service and Malta's cross recalls the support of the unit in combat. Yellow/gold means excellence.

Description

The metal device and gold enamel 1 1 / 8 inch (2.9 cm ) in its entirety, consisting of a maroon cross which was overcome by a white Maltese cross; on both sides of the laurel gold springs that are joined together at the top and overcome at the top by two scimitar chocolates pointing downward with red tassels; at the bottom of a scratchy red scroll inscribed "SURGEON FRONT LINE" in gold letters.

Symbolism

Maroon and white are colors traditionally associated with Medical Corps. The maroon stands for Army drug abstinence while Maltese cross reminds the heritage of Command 3d service and sacrifices in the field. Graffiti laurel, signifying honor and achievement, given the campaign and service of World War II. They simulate the arrow heads considering the landing unit attacks in Sicily, while forming triangles highlighting the numerical designation of the units. Scimitar represents the participation of units in two Southeast Asian Campaigns. Gold means superiority, red for courage and sacrifice.
