The Bayshore Mall is an indoor shopping center located in Eureka, California owned and run by Rouse Properties, a former division of General Growth Properties, one of the largest mall owners in the United States. It's named because it is close to Humboldt Bay. A large shopping facility is the only large mall located on the north coast of the San Francisco Bay Area, securing Eureka as a trading hub for the entire North Coast.

Histori

This mall was built in 1988 because of growing demand for shopping in the Northern Coast Region of California. The original anchors are Mervyn at the southern end, Gottschalks at the west end, JCPenney on the east end, and Sears at the north end. Currently, Sears is the only original anchor still in the mall. Longs Drugs also operates a shop in a mall, which has been closed (moved to a PayLess store purchased by Longs in the nearby Eureka Mall) and most of that space was converted to Petco in 2004.

In the early 2000s, JCPenney infiltrated the outlet store, then left the mall completely. Bed, Bath, and Beyond, along with Borders Books, come soon after and divide the anchor chamber. Then, in late 2008, Mervyn filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, and in turn, closed their Eureka store in December of that year. Gottschalks closed in July 2009, after filing Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, leaving only an anchor filled space. Kohl officially opened their new store in Mervyn's old location on September 27, 2009. The Old Navy and the Gap was closed before The Movies, a branch of the local cinema entertainment company with other sites scattered throughout the region, closed in December 2009. Borders Book closed in September 2011 after bankruptcy. Upon purchase, plans to remodel the 73,000 square foot Gottschalks space shipped to Eureka City by contractor to Walmart during the summer of 2011, and open June 12, 2012.

Hometown Buffet closes on December 31, 2011. At the end of summer 2013, TJ Maxx goes to the mall where Borders is located. That same year, the Sports and Sports Authority of ULTA went to where The Movies was, and in 2014, Sbarro closed in the midst of bankruptcy issues, while Miss Clothes, a value clothing store, came while Staples went to the mall where Hometown Buffet was at September 2015. The Avenue and Wet Seal closes in January 2015, though Avenue never shows signs of closure or exit of the business mark. A local pizza place entered the mall in January 2015 at the former Sbarro venue, later known as Hot Slice Pizzeria, with a clothing store, Salt Tree, into an empty field (but leaving only a few weeks later along with longtime RadioShack tenants). Planet Fitness opens at the end of the year (though postponed until early 2016) in which half of Hometown buffets are already in place. June 2016 sees the Authority Authority close after only three years because the company will go bankrupt. In March 2017, Hot Slice Pizzeria closed, with a Mexican restaurant opened a few weeks later in the same place.

Eureka 2010 earthquake

On January 9, 2010, an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 occurred off the coast of Eureka, about 27 miles at sea, at 4:27 pm. The mall was one of the buildings damaged by the earthquake, with loose floor and ceiling tiles, and water damage from sprinklers, but the engineers found no structural damage.

Bayshore Mall today

Currently, Bayshore mall has over 80 stores available with 70, and it is the largest shopping complex for over 200 miles. Anchor stores are Sears, Kohl's and Walmart, which opened June 13, 2012, and TJ Maxx, which opened August 25, 2013. Sports and Sports Authority ULTA was opened in 2013, but the Sports Authority declared Chapter 11 Bankrupt in 2016. Food Places Ray, a full-service supermarket, is located in a separate building just south of Kohls entrance on the same property, but closed in late 2013 when the parent company C & K Markets declares Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Other major shops include Ross Dress for Less, Bed Bath & amp; Outside, Petco, and Pier 1 Import. This mall is served by Eureka Transit Service and Redwood Transit Service.
