Criticism and controversy

Sales Tactics

Diamond Resorts is renowned for its high-pressure sales tactics used to close sales and generate costs for consumers. Club members are charged an annual maintenance fee (including management fee), set by Diamond Resorts and which the FTC warns will likely increase each year. The official SEC SEC Diamond Resorts announcement states that club members have no right to terminate membership, except in certain areas where consumers are protected by state law. Jeff Weir, owner of Diamond timeshare and a journalist covering the timeshare industry, told the New York Times: "In my experience, Diamond is much more ambitious, aggressive and downright nasty in their sales presentation than Marriott and Westin. a hard reputation in people. "

David F. Palmer, Diamond's chief executive, saw his sales method in a very different light. In an interview, Mr. Palmer illustrates how Diamond tries to bring pleasure to the interaction of its customers, both before the initial sale and after a member buys. "The industry is not quite aware that you have to engage and create intimacy and adaptation with someone you do not really know," he said. "Our lifetime subscription model creates a set of systems in which you can track that engagement and ensure you are continuing to deliver a set of experiences that exceed their expectations over the years."

Settlement with the State of Arizona on Fraud Consumer Charges

On December 23, 2016 Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced a $ 800,000 settlement with Diamond Resorts on charges that Diamond Resorts had violated the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act. From the settlement fund, $ 650.00 is used for customer restitution. Under completion, customers who have purchased timeshares in Arizona between 1 January 2011 and 23 July 2017 may be exempt from their timeshare, provided they provide a detailed description of deceptive statements or false promises made by Diamond Resorts employees during the sale.

The Prosecutor-General's website states that a false allegation relates to:

  • Total maintenance costs may increase annually (in some cases up to 25% per year);
  • The ability of consumers to resell timeshares to the public;
  • The existence of the Diamond repurchase program;
  • The ability of consumers to rent their timeshares for profit; and
  • Discounts for other travel needs.
