Description

Designed by architect Peter Dominick of 4240 Architecture Inc. (formerly part of Urban Design Group Inc.), was based on the Arts and Crafts movement in the early 1900s. The hotel has 948 rooms, in addition to 44 suites and 71 villas.

Home craftsmen often have a theme park. For the Grand Californian, the theme is taken from the idea of the garden and upgraded so the garden becomes forest. The reception hall is based on the interior of the Swedborgian Church in San Francisco, rising in scale to accommodate large reception desks. The central lobby is a large-scale living room with large fireplace and large arched beams on top, and comes with chairs and sofas arranged around a small coffee table.

Many items found throughout the hotel have been created by modern practitioners of the Arts and Crafts movement using traditional techniques. Some of Roycroft's early items are on display in the lobby.

Some hotel rooms are a tribute to various Craftsman-era architects and designers. For example, two of the guest suites, as well as the California Board Room, pay tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright; Napa Rose's restaurant features a rose motif in glass design inspired by Charles Rennie MacKintosh. The Storytellers Cafe features a large tiled mural that is an original design reproduction by Gladding, McBean Company for Robin Hood Room in Wilmington, California, a public library.

Its name is based on Grand Floridian Resort & amp; Disney; Spa, the resort of his brother, and the main resort resort of Walt Disney World. Both of these hotels do not share the theme, because Grand Californian is a Craftsman theme, while Grand Floridian is a Victorian theme. However, he shared many thematic elements with Disney's Wilderness Lodge (also designed by Dominick) with his national park putting them at Walt Disney World.

History

The hotel opened on January 2, 2001. At about 3:00 am on December 28, 2005, a Christmas tree in the main lobby was on fire after an electrical maintenance worker replaced the lamp on the tree. All 2,300 guests at the hotel were evacuated within four minutes. The fire is contained by the hotel's sprinkler system and by the Anaheim Fire Department. Two guests were treated for minor injuries, one of which was a severe headache. Guests are returned to their rooms at 07:00; some were sent to other hotels in the area.

In response to the increasing demand for guest accommodation in Anaheim, Disneyland Resort announced on 18 September 2007 the expansion of Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa that will enhance accommodation up to more than 30 percent and include the first Disney Vacation Club villas in Anaheim. The 2.5 acre (10,000 m) expansion on the south side of the hotel adds more than 200 new hotel rooms and 50 matching two-bedroom holiday villas and marks the West Coast debut of Disney Vacation Club, Disney's vacation ownership program. During this expansion and renovation, a new swimming pool is added as well as a 300-seat underground parking garage. Peter Dominick of 4240 Architecture Inc., architect for Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & amp; Spa designs an ambitious expansion to complement its existing hotel. With the completion of this major expansion, Grand Californian Hotel & amp; Disney; Spa became the third largest hotel in Orange County, up from the previous fourth position.
