Description
The Erg Chebbi sandstone reaches a height of up to 150 meters in places and it stretches 50 kilometers from north to south and up to 5-10 kilometers from east to west on the Algerian border.
A fairly large city is Erfoud, about 60 kilometers farther north. One of the other cities is Rissani, some 40 kilometers from Merzouga, and from the 8th to the 14th century there is a separate kingdom, known as Sijilmassa, which is prosperous thanks to a used caravan route.
Although rainfall is very short and unusual, in 2006 a flood adjacent to the sand dunes destroyed many buildings and killed three people.

Tourism â ⬠<â â¬
Merzouga, a local tourist center, is located near the edge of the sand dunes. A number of companies offer camel trips from Merzouga and to the desert, bringing tourists on an overnight journey several kilometers to the erg, which is enough to bring the village out of sight. The proximity of Erg Chebbi to the tourist center has led to the Sahara erg sometimes referred to as the "Merzouga sand dunes."
During the hottest season, Moroccans come to Erg Chebbi to be buried in hot sand for a few minutes each time. This is considered as a treatment for rheumatism.
