The Gobi bears , Ursus arctos gobiensis (known in Mongolian as mazaalai / ???????? ), is a subspecies of brown bear, Ursus arctos , which found in Mongolia's Gobi Desert. It is listed as critically endangered by the Redbook of Mongolian Endangered Species and by the Zoological Society of London using the IUCN standard. The UN-supported Species Migration Convention selects Gobi bears for protection by 2017. The population covers only about 30 adults in 2009 and is separated by sufficient distance from other brown bear populations to achieve reproductive isolation.
Take a rest around 9.30 am and head for the Atis Mountains. We crossed a large open plain and then entered a steep, black, and scaly valley. Just before we entered the valley, we found very rare Gobi bear footprints (ursus gobiensis) [estimated to be around thirty-two in the world and there is continuous debate among scientists about whether they are true species or sub-species].
Gobi mainly bears eating roots, fruit, and other plants, sometimes rodents; there is no evidence that they prey on large mammals. Small compared to other brown bear subspecies, adult males weigh about 96.0-138.0 kg (211.6-304.2 pounds) and females about 51.0-78.0 kg (112.4-172.0 pounds ).
Based on morphology, the Gobi brown bear is sometimes historically classified as the same subspecies as the Tibetan blue bear. However, recent phylogenetic analyzes suggest Gobi bears instead represent the population of Himalayan brown bear relics. There are only 45 Gobi bears left in the wild.
