Caruso entered the car business by acquiring a number of new car dealerships, including from General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. In the early days of TV, he monopolized commercial television broadcasts in Los Angeles with radio and TV commercials he called "HJ Caruso - he was the greatest." The Desert Sun called her "glamorous boy from automotive sales in Los Angeles."
He founded Dollar Rent-A-Car in 1966 as Dollar A Day Rent A Car. After opening five locations, he was determined to open a lucrative airport location; But the "big three" car rental companies, Hertz, Avis and National, have set up locations at airports and made it difficult for new companies to enter the market.
This led to a legal battle in the 1970s that caused the Federal Trade Commission to take action and prohibit practices that discriminate against small companies competing for airport locations. Many airports, newspapers, and local towns rejected their request to display the "Dollar A Day" sign because they felt it was a false advertisement.
In 1973, Palm Springs, California Planning Commission rejected Caruso's request to approve the "Dollar A Day" sign as "misleading advertisement." He then changed the name to Dollar Rent-A-Car. Under his guidance for 20 years, he grew to become the fourth largest car rental agency in the world with over 1,400 locations. He sold the company to Chrysler Corporation in 1990 (now part of the Dollar-Thrifty Automobile Group).
Caruso is also the head of Caruso Affiliated, which owns his car dealership, and HJC Investment Corporation, an investment company.
Legal history
On April 25, 1957 Henry J. Caruso was charged by the Los Angeles County Grand Jury for a criminal conspiracy to deceive and cheat, counterfeiting, and grand thefts associated with his car dealership. On June 5, 1957, Caruso was indicted for a number of additional thefts and large counterfeiting. Caruso pleaded guilty to two counts (fraud and massive theft) of the 25 April indictment and two counts (theft and major fraud) of the 5 June indictment. He "responded emphatically when asked if he inserted a plea of ​​guilt because he was completely guilty of the offense and if he did it freely and voluntarily."
Caruso was given a probation sentence. The probation period is given for a period of 10 years conditioned to spend the first year in a county jail, pay a $ 10,000 fine and the rest "out of any car business or business involving sales to the public." Caruso's appeal to the California Court of Appeals for withdrawing the guilty plea was denied on 21 October 1959.
In their February 3, 1958 edition, Time magazine called Caruso's car dealer "the most sucked of them all".
In 1986, the California State Attorney obtained civil and permanent orders against the Rent-A-Car Dollar for engaging in unfair competition and making false and misleading statements. The court found that the Rent-A-Car Dollar has used more than 500,000 "deceptive, misleading and ambiguous" contracts and has misrepresented the cost of improvements in 1,500 invoicing invoices.
The ruling was affirmed on appeal and the appellate court ruled that the trial court had imposed obligations on Henry J. Caruso personally because, Judge Harry W. Low wrote, "Caruso participates in unlawful practices as if he personally make misstatements."

Caruso lives with his wife, Gloria in Beverly Hills, California. She has one daughter, Cristina Caruso, and two sons, Rick J.
