On 5 August 2003, JW Marriott Jakarta was the site of a massive terrorist car bombing. The bomb exploded in the car at the hotel entrance directly from the lobby, smashed the entrance, sent marble panels from the lobby wall (along with near-annihilation of the lobby), and crashed into a large number of glass panels on the exterior. Several guests in their hotel room mentioned that the force of the explosion hit them as a result of the entire building shaking. One guest also said that his window burst into his bedroom and the force of the explosion made him fly from one end of the room to the other. The victims included the death of several guards, as well as many guest injuries. The hotel formed a strong reconstruction team and successfully reopened with complete facilities before the end of the year.
