The company opened its first hotel, Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel, in Arlington, Virginia, in 1957. Their second hotel, the Marriott Key Bridge in the same neighborhood of Rosslyn, is the longest hotel to continue operating at Marriott International, and celebrates the anniversary 50th of 2009. Their son, JW (Bill) Marriott, Jr., led the company to spectacular growth worldwide for more than 50 years of his career. Recent developments (2014-present)

On October 3, 2014, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined Marriott $ 600,000 for unauthorized use of the "detention" feature of a Wi-Fi monitoring system to deliberately disrupt client-owned networks in the Gaylord Opryland Resort & amp; Convention Center in Nashville. This scheme interferes with the operation of the client's mobile hotspot by sending fake Wi-fi authentication packets. Marriott International, Inc., the American Hotel and Lodging Association and Ryman Hospitality Properties responded by failing to petition the FCC to change the rules so they could continue to disrupt the client's network, a position they were forced to abandon in early 2015 in response to reaction from clients , mainstream media, major technology companies and national mobile operators. This incident attracts unfavorable publicity against Marriott's practice to charge a $ 13-15/day transient shoppers for wi-fi connections, routinely included in the base price in most discount chains, and for very high wi-fi costs (usually $ 250-1000 per device) is charged to audience-convention at a time when $ 2.25 billion annually in the "incidental costs" incurred charged by US-based hotels for their residents has attracted criticism and negative media coverage.

On January 27, 2015, Marriott acquired Canada's Delta Hotels hotel chain. Delta operates 40 hotels in Canada.

On November 16, 2015, Marriott announced the acquisition of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide for $ 13 billion. A competing bid for Starwood at $ 14 billion from a consortium led by Anbang Insurance Group China was announced March 3, 2016, transferring Starwood to halt the deal with Marriott and pursue an offer from Anbang Insurance Group. After Marriott raised its bid to $ 13.6 billion on March 21, Starwood terminated the Anbang agreement and resumed its merger with Marriott. Following all regulatory approvals required in the United States and around the world during 2016, Marriott closed its merger with Starwood on September 23, 2016, creating the world's largest hotel company with more than 5700 properties, 1.1 million rooms, and a new portfolio of 30 brand.

The Starwood acquisition gives Marriott a larger non-US presence; about 75% of Starwood's revenue comes from non-US markets. The acquisition was the largest since 2007, when Blackstone acquired Hilton for $ 26 billion. There is a $ 400 million exemption fee if the transaction is not completed. Executives note that total transaction and integration expenditures may exceed $ 100 million.

Great American Parks

Marriott develops three theme parks, where two theme parks are opened. They operated as Marriott's Great America from 1976 to 1984. The parks are located in Gurnee, Illinois; Santa Clara, California; and the proposed location but never built in Washington, DC, and themed celebrated American history. American-themed areas under ownership of Marriott ownership include "Carousel Plaza" (first section outside main gate); "Hometown Square" themed small town; "Midwest Large Livestock Exposition In County Fair" with the theme of Turns of the rural-fair century; "Yankee Harbor", inspired by the port of New England of the 19th century; "Yukon Territory," resembles a Canadian/Alaskan logging camp; and French Quarter-model "Orleans Place". At the opening, the parks have almost the same layout.

In 1984, Marriott dumped its amusement park division; both parks were sold and today it is associated with a national amusement park chain. Gurnee's location is sold to Six Flags Theme Parks where it operates today as Six Flags Great America. The location of Santa Clara was sold to the City of Santa Clara, which defended its underlying property and sold the park to Kings Entertainment Company, renamed Paramount Parks in 1993. From 1993 to 2006, Santa Clara's location was known as Paramount's Great America. In 2006, Paramount Parks was acquired by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company; Santa Clara Park operates today as California Great America. In the years after their sale, the layout of the two parks has deviated substantially.
