Notholaena californica is a fern species known by the common name California cloak fern . It's native to southern California, Arizona, and adjacent northwestern Mexico, where it grows in dry and rocky conditions, often in the desert and the habitats of the kaparal.

Description
The leaves are divided into asymmetric leaflets that are divided into perforated parts, the leaves have a length of 3 to 20 cm, not including the length, brown leaf stalks. No hairy and no weights. The leaves are covered with a rough exudate known as farina.
- Chemotypes
Ferns come in two chemotypes that can be distinguished by farina, white or yellow colors, and both are rarely found to grow together. Both chemotypes are sometimes treated as subspecies.

- Notholaena californica ssp. leucophylla - endemic to the northwestern San Gabriel Mountains, east of San Jacinto Mountain.
