History Edit

The area was once home to Kawaiisu people. Several petroglyphs and pictographs are found in the El Paso Mountains and are a ritual site of the early local origin of the early Coso people. They created extensive carvings on the rocks in El Paso and the neighboring mountains of Red Rock Canyon. and doing considerable trade with other tribes as far as Chumash on the Pacific coast.

The colorful rock formations in the park served as landmarks during the early 1870s for a 20-mule team cargo cart that stopped for water. This park protects important paleontological sites and remains of mining operations of the 1890s era.

1933 and 1999 Edit

Between these two photos, 66 years have passed. In 1933, the Red Rock Canyon image was on Route 6 of the USA, a good travel route from Bishop to Los Angeles along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. The landscape at this point on the road eventually led to the creation of Red Rock Canyon State Park in 1968. A dirt road crosses the center of the landscape.

In a 1999 photo, a total of 17 species are now in the foreground. There is no Yuccas tree, Joshua or any other plant that has survived for 66 years between the dates of the photographs. In most of the replica photography, some Yuccas seem to live longer than about 40 years. Many more plants appear in the 1999 view, in part as a response to diminution and increased rainfall in the latter part of the 20th century. For example, roads that previously crossed the foreground are hard to detect. The foreground of this view is geomorphically active, and relax and small trenches crosses the front. The young geomorphic surface, as illustrated in this 1999 view, supports a collection of young plants that recover relatively quickly after interruption.
