San Pedro de Atacama is the city of Chile and commune in El Loa Province, Antofagasta Region. Located east of Antofagasta, about 106 km (60 mi) southeast of Calama and the Chuquicamata copper mine, overlooking the Licancabur volcano. It features a significant archeological museum, R. P. Gustavo's Le Paige Archaeological Museum, with a large collection of relics and artifacts from the region. The nearby original ruins are now attracting more and more tourists interested in learning about pre-Columbian culture.

In Chile's election division, San Pedro de Atacama is represented in the Chamber of Deputies by Marcos Espinosa (PRSD) and Felipe Ward (UDI) as part of the third election district, (together with Tocopilla, MarÃÆ'a Elena, Calama and OllagÃÆ'üe). The communes are represented in the Senate by Alejandro Guillier ÃÆ'lvarez (PRSD) and Pedro Araya Guerrero (Ind.) As part of the second senatorial constituency (Antofagasta Region).
Climate
The city lies at an average of 7,000 feet (2,100 m), and visitors often experience mild altitude sickness such as dizziness, lethargy, and headaches. The local climate is very dry and light, with daytime temperatures between 25-30 degrees Celsius (77-86 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer (December to February) and 18-25 à ° C (64-77 à ° F) in winter (June to August).
