Herbal Essences is a hair dyeing and hair care product line by Clairol. The brand was established in 1972 as a single shampoo Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo (formally set as Clairol herbal essence shampoo ). There are twelve collections of products, each designed to have different effects on the user's hair.

Clairol introduced Herbal Essence in 1971. The original Herbal Essence (now called Herbal Essences) uses a cartoon image of a natural girl in a poll on the front label. The original color of the shampoo is green and can be seen through the packaging of clear plastic bottles.

Herbal Essences was known in the 1990s for ads featuring female actresses who moan while using the product. Sampo offers "a truly organic experience".
