Mexican Beans (also known as Spanish

After the eggs are overgrown by moths on hatching plants, the larvae feed on the inside of the bean (until it becomes a hollow) and attach itself to the inside of the bean with a silken thread. Larvae can live for months in the nuts with different periods of dormancy. If the larva has adequate moisture and temperature conditions, it will live long enough to enter the cocoon stage. In the spring, moths force out of the bean through a round "trap door", leaving the casing of the pupal. After the metamorphosis, small, silver, and gray moths live no more than a few days.

As a novelty

When the bean is suddenly heated (by holding in the palm of the hand, for example) the larva twitches and seizures, pulls the yarn and causes a distinctive jump. Leaving seeds in a hot environment (such as direct sunlight) for long periods of time can easily kill them.

Beans become energetic when one holds them in hand (out of the box) for a few minutes. These beans should also be green on the sides. If someone shakes a nut around one's ear and hears a loud sound inside, the larvae are dead or entering the cocoon stage where the hard shell makes the toy softer.

Jumping beans are still available for sale in the United States. In England, they were a new item that was common in the 1950s.

Plastic Toys with this name are manufactured and sold in packs of about 5-10. It resembles a drug capsule and has a metal ball in it. When the surface of the capsule is lying on its side, the ball rolls over to the other end and creates a capsule twitch. A group of some of these "beans" are gently shaken to move unexpectedly.

Maintenance and storage

Nuts should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Nuts need periodic rehydration, mimicking monsoon weather from their home country, Mexico. To rehydrate the beans, they should be soaked, but not submerged, for about three hours in chlorine-free water once or twice a month.
