Bandit Golf
During the Depression, Austin runs a local golf shop in Atlanta during the summer. In winter he often visits distant places in southern Florida, playing a big money game against gangsters on vacation from Chicago. After the first year, they will not bet against him so he finds a set of left-handed clubs and plays with the flaw. The following year he played with one hand. He often thought of side bets that could not be heard. Once, he won a $ 5,000 bet that he could make a nominal hit of the ball with a Coke bottle. His exploits earned him the nickname "The Golfing Bandit."
Austin also travels across the country doing trick shots and challenges anyone to try to defeat him. He says he can hit a variety of shots with a regular set of golf clubs. He told a biographer that he "lived like a maharaja" during that time. When the steel shaft was first introduced, Sam Snead received a set (a rather stiff set) and immediately gave it to Austin, saying, "You're the only one swinging fast enough to hit this."
Moving to Hollywood
In the late 1930s, Austin moved to Los Angeles to become a pro at the Wilshire Country Club. When he arrived, the job failed so he worked on other golf courses, teaching and competing. His roommate is Errol Flynn and they often visit local nightclubs to find women. Austin also auditioned for a role in the film and eventually appeared in a number of films. However, his golf and acting were suspended when he joined the service. Having never completed US citizenship, he went to Canada and joined R.A.F.
Austin sets a name for himself as a golf teacher and is eventually sought by Howard Hughes for lessons. He eventually set up a fitness center in Hollywood where he taught boxing, tennis, baseball and golf. The walls of the gym are covered with mirrors that speed up the learning process. When he gave a talk about golf, he wore a tight black tricot with a white line of skeletal structure. He wants the students to see how the bones are positioned in the right golf swing. Austin also appeared/acted in the movie "Star Chamber" Michael Douglas as Judge Lang. Austin's wife, Tanya, is also in the movies. She appeared in the movie "The Blues Brothers." Austin also has a pretty good voice to sing a light opera. He sometimes finds a song, some say, the most awkward moment. Austin also speaks several languages.
Setting the World Record
Over the years, Austin is known by professional golfers because of the length of the tee. But it was one of those drives in 1974 that secured its name in history. While playing in the US National Senior Art Tournament, at Winterwood Golf Course (now Desert Rose), Austin was put in fours with PGA Champion Chandler Harper. After hitting some 400-yard drives, Chandler said, "Mike, let's see you're really letting one go." Austin rides green at 450 yards par 4. It's brought to the edge of the green, bounces up and rolls past the pin and out from the rear edge. In a 2003 interview, Chandler said he found a ball on the next tee box and called Austin, "It's impossible, but there's a ball here." They identified the ball as Austin and stepped into the green center. The journey was 515 yards. GBWW no longer recognizes the world's longest hard disk in his book.
Several factors make this record of achievement very unusual, although there is an estimated puller at 25 mph. Drive is done on flat ground, using timber timber drivers with 10 degree attic and 43.5 "extra-rigid steel shaft, the ball is gentle balata and Mike Austin is 64. Current improved technology should reach much further distance under conditions the same one.
The Mike Austin Swing
Austin's swing golf, known as The Mike Austin Swing, is currently practiced and taught by many golf professionals.
It is generally agreed that the two main keys of the swing are:
- To set specific measured setting positions that will allow golfers to use the C7 vertebra as a pivot point to move the spine down laterally along the target line and consequently utilize leg strength.
- To throw the club from the top of the back swing compared to trying to delay the club's release.
However, there seems to be confusion and controversy over the actions of the hand used and/or advocated by Austin. Apparently, different instructors are told different things and/or many things. So depending on the instructor or source, you will hear about the more conventional type of hand movement versus the hand movements that make the blade more square to the swing path through the hitting area.
Some instructors like Jaacob Bowden observed Austin's talk about both. Austin will say that distance has nothing to do with size or strength, it is related to "flexible speed."
Flammer training aids from Austin, appearing in the Tin Cup movie, developed before the stroke and are no longer sold, promote the kind of revolving hand action.
It is believed that after Austin had a stroke and he could no longer swing normally, he changed his view on teaching hand actions to eliminate rolling action.
Mike Dunaway (his greatest protégé) says it's about Dr. Mike Austin, "He is the dean of all golf instruction since the beginning of time, as far as I know." Austin is called, "The Leonardo Da Vinci" of the golf swing.
Instructor
Three professionals currently teach their oyster to spend most of their time with Austin (in alphabetical order):
- Mike Dunaway in Arkansas
- Walter "Smiley" Jones in Oregon/California
- Daniel Robert Shauger in California
Another professional who met Austin, worked with him, or was teaching his swing (in alphabetical order):
- Jaacob Bowden in NY, USA
- Betsy Cullen (former winner of the LPGA TOOLS) currently at Pine Forest C.C. in Houston, Texas
- Heiko Falke in Germany Mike Austin Master since 2005, the brand owner for Germany
- John Marshall in Atlanta
- Steve Pratt in California
- Deb Vangellow, Sweetwater C.C. Sugarland, Texas
Those who use the basics of Austin swing tend to be known not only as long hitters, but very accurate as well.
Dunaway was on the cover of Golf Digest magazine in August 1985 and November 1987, called "the longest human striker of golf ball on earth" by Greg Norman, shown hitting him on, to or through the green 10/15 times on the hole 375 yards and 302.8 yards/drive in 2005 2005 Wal-Mart First Tee Terbuka will lead the Champions Tour within driving distance.
Jones is also the above average hitter in the Champions Tour event.
Bowden won the 2003 Pinnacle Distance Challenge with a 381-yard drive that was televised and he won several qualifications for RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships including a record set of 421 meters grid.
Marshall is the senior winner of 2005-06 ALDA Super Senior and five-time world champion Drive RE/MAX Final.
