A stretcher is one of the few participants who helped bring the coffin to the funeral.

Some traditions distinguish between the role of the bearer and the coffin. The first is a ceremonial position, carrying the end of a pall or rope attached to it. The latter undertakes heavy lifting and transportation. There may be a bearer only in a symbolic sense if the coffin is in an animal or a vehicle.

In Western culture, caretakers are usually members of a male family, close friends, or colleagues from the deceased. An important exception is Lee Harvey Oswald's cemetery, where journalists, who were forced to serve to carry coffins, exceeded the number of mourners. In some Asian cultures, the caretaker is not a member of the family but an outsider, given a tip to carry the carriage service.

Sometimes additional bodies bearers, known as Honorary Pallbearers, walk behind or right in front of the coffin in a display of additional distinction to the deceased. This type of bearer is most often a man in the profession of the deceased who has achieved significant achievements in their position. [1]

Etymology

A "pall" is a thick cloth covering a coffin. So the term "plumber" is used to denote a person who "bores" a pallet covered coffin.
