The Desert Storm trading card is a set of trade cards featuring people and equipment involved in the Persian Gulf War. The cards are published in the United States by various companies and the size of the set varies between companies (such as nine cards set issued by Crown Sports Cards, and 250 cards issued by Pro Set). The cards were claimed to be educational, with the proceeds of sale benefiting veterans of the Persian Gulf War, and produced at a time when the trade card industry expanded far beyond traditional sports figures.

Topps set

The Topps set consists of 88 cards and 22 stickers, and includes images of people and materials from all sides of the conflict. They feature people like Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. and Dick Cheney, or weapons or military vehicles. As Supreme Commander, George H. W. Bush is featured as the first card in the series. The weapons and equipment cards provide a description of the features of each item, with information provided by sources from The Pentagon and weapons suppliers. Package of nine cards and one sticker cost 50 Â ¢. Topps commented on a series that stated it was "not reckless or opportunistic", and the product did not "glorify the war". Topps insist on cards provided by adults and children educational information in a "non-sensational" way.

Topps issued the Storm Desert Collector Card in three series: Series I: Coalition For Peace, Series II: Series of Victories and Series III: Mudik Edition.

Others set

Pro Set enters the field after Topps does so and, they claim, they take their inspiration from the troops themselves, who should ask the company, "Why do not you set up a card to give know the Americans what we're doing here. "They publish a set of 250 cards (including foreign leaders and middle eastern countries), sold in ten packs, with proceeds going" charity for Desert Storm veteran kids ", according to president of the company. Pacific Trading Card published a set of 110 cards, and a set of nine caricatures published by Crown Sports Cards.

Background and popularity

â € <â €

The Desert Storm trade card is part of a wider movement in the trade card industry, which appears to be shifting from the "too high and too expensive" market, and has started printing cards featuring "cartoon heroes, television figures, rock stars, and even killer ".

According to Steven C. Dubin, they show a wave of "patriotic passion" that swept the United States during Desert Storm. That these cards are iconic images of economic combination and patriotism have been noted by many authors.

Popularity and results

Popular trading cards outside of typical "card collectors", and they sell quickly. Some stores sell their stocks within a few hours of delivery, and others sell within a week. Pro Set promises to donate (either) $ 1 million or the entire proceeds from their Desert Storm series of trading cards to Desert Storm veteran children, while Topps makes unspecified donations, including to the United Service Organization.

Their popularity was evidenced by Colin Powell, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993, who said that at the time he spent "most of the time" signing cards. Ten years later, Topps revisited the idea by printing a set of similar cards associated with Operation Enduring Freedom. Supposedly, a card with Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. is the inspiration for the 1992 Beastie Boys title album Check Your Head .

In the film Garden Garden (2004), a scene shows Andrew (Zach Braff) looking through a binder containing a full set of trade cards belonging to his friend Mark (Peter Sarsgaard), who briefly discussed with them their meaning.

Criticism

The trading cards have been attacked for at least two reasons, accuracy and cultural impact. Information about some of the Topps cards was criticized as false (as saying NATO had 27 members, when in 1991 it had sixteen), excessive (such as "ground combatant infantry"), overtly apparent ("Carrier carrying large loads") , or "simply incomprehensible" (such as vague statements "Distance and accuracy (of missiles) vary from several feet to several hundred miles").
