The Las Vegas Desert Classic is a dart tournament, hosted by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and British Darts Organization (BDO) and is held annually in July from 2002 to 2009. The original place is MGM Grand Casino and Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada from 2002 to 2005, but the tournament moved to the strip to Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino from 2006 to 2009. In 2017 is Back at the Las Vegas Desert Classic BDO at MGM Grand, Las Vegas.
The tournament brings the total prize of Ã, Â £ 126,400 (about US $ 250,000). Due to the time difference between England and USA, the match is played in the morning local time - which is prime-time night in England where the tournament is broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Fox Sports World originally aired live tournaments but in recent years they broadcast recording footage in the United States. Partypoker.net became the first sponsor of the event in 2006.
The Classic format changed over the years. In 2002, the tournament had the best set format of 7 feet per set. In 2003, the tournament had a foot-only format along with the round robin group stage of 8 groups with 3 players each, before being a direct knockout of the quarter-finals and beyond. In 2004 and 2005, the tournament again became a straightforward KO with the best 5 foot format set per set. In 2006, the tournament only had the foot format in the Big 32, before returning to the best set 5 leg per set format for the Big 16, Final Quarter, Semi Finals and Final. From 2007 to 2009, the tournament remained straight but moved back to the foot-only format throughout.
Phil Taylor won the title five times out of the eight years the show was staged. Peter Manley, John Part, and Raymond van Barneveld are the only other event winners. Mark McGeeney won the title but his championship at BDO.
The Las Vegas Desert Classic tournament has retired in 2010 and a new tournament held in Las Vegas, the Tropicana World Series, has been placed in its place. However, the tournament was not broadcast on television.
