Downtown Disney (officially Downtown Disney District ) is an outdoor shopping center located at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. Opened in 2001 as part of the resort extension from one park (Disneyland) to the multi-park resort complex.

Downtown Disney is located between two Disneyland Resort theme parks and hotels. It's much smaller than that of Walt Disney World, now called Disney Springs. Entrance fee is not required for the area. Downtown Disney is designed to appeal to locals and encourage extended stays in the resort district. One side of Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and one side of the Adventure Tower Disneyland Hotel overlooks Downtown Disney, providing views of the area.
During the late 1990s the expansion of the Disneyland Resort which also included the Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney building was built over the space previously occupied by the original Disneyland parking lot and the Disneyland Hotel, and included a pedestrian bridge over Disneyland Drive (formerly West Street), which Admitted to accommodate the bridge. Downtown Disney opened on 12 January 2001.

Monorel Disneyland System
The Disneyland Monorail system has two stations, one located at Tomorrowland and another at Downtown Disney. Built as part of the 1961 Monorail extension, the station was known as the Disneyland Hotel Monorail Station from 1961 to 2000. The station underwent major renovations and re-theming as part of the 1998-2001 Disneyland Resort expansion, and was re-designated as the Downtown Disney Monorail Station in 2001. Entry to Disneyland Park is required for a monorail ride.
When Downtown Disney first opens, guests of the amusement park can purchase admission tickets from the ticket booths adjacent to the monorail station. However, the ticket booths closed a few years later, leaving the revolving doors of Downtown Monorail Station open only to guests who have already bought admission tickets elsewhere.
