Desert Racing

Desert racing began in the early 20th century. The initial racing watchdog in North America is the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA). The body was formed in 1967 by Ed Pearlman. The first event was a race across the Mexican desert, to the southeast through most of the length of Baja California, which originated from Ensenada to La Paz. The event was first called Mexico 1000, and came to be known as Baja 1000. This event is now approved by SCORE International.

Most of the desert races are built on government recreation ground and have a passable path of 25 to 1000 miles. Various vehicle classes run different number of rounds depending on engine size or suspension system settings. Currently, there are some small organizations that are growing quite rapidly in this scene. One of the most popular is the Best in the Desert series, known as the Vegas to Reno racing race (the longest off-road race in the US with Vegas 2009 racing to the 1000 mile Reno). Also popular is the Mojave Off-Road Racing Enthusiast series. Started in 1997 as a small family-oriented race series, it has grown to nearly 200 per race. MUCH MORE using tracks set in desert land in the Barstow and Lucerne Valley areas of the Mojave Desert in California. The Mojave Desert Racing series has attracted many competitors from the dead race of CORR.

On August 14, 2010, a modified Ford Ranger pickup truck, race at MDR sanctioned "California 200", drove off the track to a group of spectators, killed eight people, and asked questions about the future of offroad racing on public lands.

Short course race

Short course of off-road racing has races on the circuit less than five miles (like Crandon International Off-Road Raceway). The race takes place on short tracks combining left and right turns of various fingers, and jumping and occasionally washing up walk boards and gravel pits. Another format popularized by Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group is called stadium racing, where offroad racing vehicles are used in the offroad racetrack while built inside the stadium. In 2012, Robby Gordon created the Super Truck Series Stadium, a descendant of what was once the Micky Thompson Series.

The simpler and shorter song format is popular in many fairs, and is called the Tough Truck (or Tuff) competition. These tracks are usually much shorter, and usually, competitors are traveling individually and timed.

In 2014, there are two major organizations that promote short course off road racing in the United States. The TORC: The Off Road Championship comes from racing series in the United States Midwestern, promoting races in the East, Midwestern, and some Western places. The Luke Off Oil Racing Series Off Road focuses on promoting events especially on the west coast. Both of these series have professional drivers and racing teams. There are also some grassroots organizations, one of the longest living is the Mid America Off Road Association that promotes short course off road racing in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

Other formats

The general idea of offroad racing can also be extended to include hillclimbing or other racing forms that do not occur on specified and paved paths. The Frozen Rush features an off-road trophy truck racing on snowy ski slopes.

The event was won straight by Les Siviour of Australia driving a Class 6 Nissan Patrol, for the Nissan Team.
