History
The lodge lodge and adobe guest cabin- casitas are designed in the Pueblo Revival style, by National Park Service Lyle E. Bennett architects and others from the Service Branch and Park Service Planning. Construction was carried out by Civil Conservation Corps builders and craftsmen over 1937-1940. Some of the main cottage buildings were renovated from the 1920s on the site, known as the Stone Tree House because of the many local petrified woods used in its architectural elements.
After a post-war design revision by architect Mary Jane Colter, it was operated by Fred Harvey Company as Harvey House from 1947 to 1963, when it was closed. Demolition was proposed in the mid-1970s, but after public protests the building was reopened for limited use in 1976. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
The main lodge building of the Painted Desert Inn was extensively rehabilitated and restored, reopened as a museum and bookstore in 2006. Overnight accommodation and food services are currently not available at the lodge.

Mural
Hopi Artist Fred Kabotie was invited by Colter to paint the Inn mural in 1947-48. Colter knows Kabotie from a previous collaboration at Fred Harvey Hopi House in Grand Canyon National Park. Kabotie's work describes aspects of Hopi's life, including traveling through Painted Desert to collect salt.
