Legenda
The story is told in the book Saint Paul's Life, the First Ascendant ( Vitae Patrum ( Vita Pauli primi eremitae )) 375-376. Paul of Thebes was born around 227 in Thebaid of Egypt.
Paul and his married sister lost their parents. To get Paul's legacy, his brother-in-law sought to betray him to the persecutors. According to Jerome's Vitae Patrum ( Vita Pauli primi eremitae ), Paul fled to Theban desert as a youth during the persecution of Decius and Valerianus around the year 250.
She lives in this desert mountain in a cave near the clear spring and palm trees, the leaves that give her the clothes and the fruits that give her the only source of food until she is 43 years old, when the raven starts carrying half the bread every day. He will stay in the cave for the rest of his life, almost a hundred years.
Paul of Thebes is known for posterity because around the year 342, Anthony the Great was told in the dream of the existence of an older ascetic, and went to find him. Jerome recounts that Anthony the Great and Paul met when the latter was 113 years old. They talked to each other for one day and one night. Synaxarium shows every saint invites others to bless and break bread, as a sign of honor. Paul holds one side, puts the other side into the hands of Father Anthony, and soon the bread passes through the middle and each takes its share. When Anthony next visited him, Paul was dead. Anthony wrapped it in a tunic that was a gift from Athanasius of Alexandria and buried it, with two lions helping dig a grave.
Pastor Anthony returned to his prison while carrying a cloak knitted with palm leaves. He respects the robe so he only wears it twice a year: on Easter, and on Pentecost.

The Church of St. Paul's Cave marks the place where St. Anthony, "Monastic Father," and Saint Paul, "The First Hermit," are believed to have met.
He is also the patron saint of the San Pablo Diocese (Philippines) and is a titular of the Diocesan Cathedral in San Pablo, Laguna, Philippines.
The Order of Saint Paul The First Hermit was founded in Hungary in his honor in the 13th century. He is usually represented with a palm tree, two lions and a crow.
