Histori

The city was once part of North Yarmouth called Harraseeket, after the Harraseeket River. First settled around 1700, he departed and was founded on 14 February 1789 as Freeport. It may be named "from its openness of the harbor" (free of ice). Freeport has grown into four villages - Mast Landing, Porter Landing, South Freeport, and Freeport Corner - all now part of the Harraseeket Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The current head on the Harraseeket River is Mast Landing, from which timber is shipped, mainly for use as a mast of a ship. The estuary is dammed to provide hydro power for mills, sawmills and sawmills, with simple manufacturing and woodworking. Porter Landing was involved in shipbuilding, which was important in Freeport after the Revolutionary War. The industry reached its peak in the decade between 1850 and 1860, but declined with the Civil War. South Freeport, the largest of the seaside villages, once owned four shipyards. Other businesses include fishing, canning and farming. In 1903, Casco Castle and Amusement Park were built here by Amos Gerald to drive the ride in a trolley car. The hotel burned down in 1914, but the tower still stands. Freeport's Corner is an inland village for agriculture and commerce, but the 1849 railway entrance helped it develop into the city's commercial center, which remains. In the 1800s, fabrics were shipped from New York and Boston to be garments by local workers. Entrepreneur E. B. Mallet establishes here a sawmill, brick making, granite quarry and big shoe factory.

In 1912, Leon Leonwood Bean opened a shop in the basement of his brother's clothing store in Freeport Corner, selling "Bean Boot" (or Maine Hunting Shoe). This store, L. L. Bean, became so popular that in 1951 it began to open 24 hours a day. The catalog facility of mail and mail ordering extends to Freeport's main business, and companies around the world with annual sales of over one billion dollars. Flagship store L.L. Bean is a shopping center outlet in Freeport city. The city sees about 3.5 million visitors annually, spending $ 308 million by 2015 alone. L.L. Bean, for its part, has invested heavily in activities for visitors and residents, including their School of Outer Discovery, and their Summer Concert Series, which has attracted artists such as Edwin McCain, Great Big Sea, Buckwheat Zydeco and Rockapella.

In 1982, McDonald's made plans to destroy a Greek Revival house in 1850 to build one of its standard stores. The condemnation of the population led the city to adopt new rules about what businesses could and could not do with their buildings, and McDonald's built a restaurant inside the house and opened it in 1984, retaining its exterior appearance. This is one of the first times McDonald's was forced to change its restaurant design to suit local requirements.
