Ouarzazate (Berber language: ???????? , Warzazat; Arabic: ??????? ?), dubbed the Desert Door , is a city and capital of Ouarzazate Province in the region of DrÃƒÆ' Ã‚ Â¢ a-Tafilalet in central-central Morocco. Ouarzazate is at an altitude of 1,160 meters (3,810 ft) in the middle of a plateau south of the High Atlas Mountains. To the south of the city is the desert.

The city is predominantly inhabited by Berber speakers, who built many famous kasbah (locally known as: E> man ) and buildings of known territory. Ouarzazate is an important holiday destination in Morocco, as a base for trips across the DrÃƒ Â¢ Ã¢,Â¬Ã¢ "Â¢ Valley and into the desert. The fortified village (ksar) of AÃƒÆ'Ã‚Â¯t Benhaddou in the west of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ouarzazate district is the location of the famous filmmaking, with the largest studios of Morocco inviting many international companies to work here. Movies like Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Living Daylights (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ < (1999), Gladiator (2000), The Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Kundun (1998), Hanna (2011), The Hills Have Eyes (2006) , and Salmon Fishing in Yemen (2011 ) was shot here, as part of the TV series Game of Thrones .

The Ouarzazate solar power plant invested and created by the Arab League is expected to open its first phase in December 2015.

Etimologi

Its name comes from a Berber phrase meaning "without sound" or "without confusion".

History

For a long time, Ouarzazate was a small intersection point for African traders on their way to northern Morocco and Europe. During the French period, Ouarzazate extends as a garrison city, administrative center and customs post. This is the home of the Taourirt kasbah, which is a casbah of the former caÃƒÆ''d and later owned by T'hami El Glaoui. The Krupp field rifle that secures Glaoui's powers is displayed outside today's kasbah.

This area is also known as Ouazguita carpet with red-orange geometric design on a black background.

Climate

Ouarzazate is hot and dry in summer, but can be very cold in winter, with cold winds coming from the High Atlas Mountains.

Movie studio

Atlas Studios is one of the largest film studios in the world, in terms of land area. Some historic films are taken here, including The Living Daylights , Asterix & amp; Obelix: Mission Cleopatra , Lawrence of Arabia , Men Who Will Be King , Kingdom of Heaven and Babylon >. It's also the location of an episode of the Amazing Race 10 and Game of Thrones series. Prison Break Season 5 is also located here.

Kasbah Town-AÃƒÆ'Ã‚Â¯t Benhaddou is close by. Many trips through the Draa River valley to the Sahara from the city. This includes a trip to Zagora, an oasis city surrounded by palm tree plantations and a departure point for the camel train to Timbuktu, a journey that will take about 52 days. These days the border to Algeria is closed, stopping the Timbuktu route.

The city is part of the 2006 and 2007 Dakar Rally routes.
