The Strzelecki Desert is located in the Far North Region in South Australia, Southwest Queensland, and west New South Wales. It is positioned in the northeast of Lake Eyre Basin, and north of Flinders Ranges. Two other deserts occupy Lake Eyre Basin - the Desert of Tirari and the Simpson Desert.

The desert covers 80,250 km 2 making it the seventh largest desert in Australia. Dingo Fence, Birdsville Line, Strzelecki Line, Diamantina River, Cooper Creek, and Strzelecki Creek all pass through the Desert.

The desert is characterized by a vast desert and is home to three wilderness areas. It was named after the Polish explorer Pawe? Edmund Strzelecki by Charles Sturt. He was the first native explorer in the area, followed by an ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition.

Most of the desert is preserved in the Strzelecki Nature Reserve in South Australia. Part of the eastern part of the desert is protected by Sturt National Park in New South Wales. Dusky Hopping Mouse's endangered population lives in the desert.

Cobbler's sandblast near Lake Blanche is part of the Strzelecki Desert where the sand dunes are replaced by eroded small hills, mostly with vegetation above it. This area presents great difficulties for early attempts to cross the desert by car, and the name relates to the hardest sheep to be cut, known as the "cobbler".
