Twin Palms , also known as Frank Sinatra House , at 1148 East Alejo Rd is a medieval modern house in Palm Springs, California. The house was designed by E. Stewart Williams, for a commission of American singer and actor Frank Sinatra. The house is Williams's first housing commission. Sinatra lived in the house from the end of 1947 to 1954, and sold his house in 1957.

History

Sinatra started coming to Palm Springs in the late 1940s. He has been told about it by his close friend, composer Jimmy Van Heusen, who stopped for fuel there while flying to Los Angeles. Van Heusen told Sinatra about the beauty of the desert in the future, and Sinatra insisted that they fly there that night. Sinatra's acquaintances who also started frequenting Palm Springs in the 1940s included Lana Turner and Dinah Shore, and actress Ava Gardner who became his second wife. On May 1, 1947 Sinatra entered E. Stewart Williams' office, donned a white sailor hat and ate ice cream, and requested that the company build a Georgian house as a weekend residence; he recently signed a film contract with Metro Goldwyn Meyer, and has made his first $ 1 million. Feeling that Georgian style is not suitable for extreme desert environments, Williams shows two architectural drawings of Sinatra, one of Georgian design, and the other from a modern one-story house. Sinatra chose modern design, and the house became Williams's first housing commission. Brother and architect Williams's partner Roger later said he was "very happy" that Sinatra chose modern design, believing that "We will be destroyed if we are forced to build Georgia in the desert". Sinatra demanded that the house finish just in time for the Christmas party she wanted to host. The house finally finished shortly before the new year at a cost of $ 150,000. Twin Palms then photographed by Julius Shulman.

The house was later occupied by a Texas couple for 43 years who let the house be dilapidated, until it sold 1997 for $ 135,000. It was then sold in 2000 for $ 1,345,000 and $ 2.9 million in 2005. Two Palms was offered for sale in 2010 for $ 3.25 million.

Design

Twin Palms is a single-story residential building, 4,500 square meters in size with 4 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms, built around a long, rectangular, horizontal line with steel and aluminum and a window that extends to the ground. The house has a flat roof and a slight slant, and a piano-shaped pool, a completely unintentional design. The house was named for two palm trees standing next to it. The house will be an early example of a style known as desert modernism.
